Abstract painter Hannah Coton from Bristol
Please introduce yourself
Hello! I’m Hannah, a visual artist living in Bristol, UK.
Why did you start making art?
I’ve always used drawing as a way to better understand myself and the world around me. It has carried me through the hardest times in my life and has always created a space for me to explore my own emotions.
How do you approach the creation of a new painting?
My work is inherently abstract. I’m always looking for how a new shape or composition can be formed from existing lines and areas of negative space. I love to combine strong shapes with bold colours to create striking imagery that is constantly evolving.
Artistic guiding principle
I aim to create impactful work that can translate into a multitude of environments. As my work is highly driven by aesthetics, the impression or feeling the work creates varies from person to person. I love to create that opportunity for the viewer to create their own story from my work and find their own possibilities within it.
What means art to you?
Drawing, painting, print-making.. Whatever it is I am doing, I do it from a place of complete contentment and fulfillment. I aim to carry on making work that I love first and foremost as it is the most sacred thing in my life. Creativity = happiness!!
Hannah’s motto
Be present, stay creative!
Hannah Coton ★ Artist resume
I am an abstract artist living and working in Bristol, UK. My work is fueled by self-exploration and creating new opportunities, I do this by recycling shapes and colours from past works to inform future ones. I am heavily inspired by my environment and music, which I use to evoke a feeling big enough to paint. I studied BA Drawing & Print at Bristol UWE (2015-18) before taking the step to become freelance.
Thank you, Hannah.
