Abstract paintings by Marianne Schrøder
Let’s talk about your background
I am an abstract painter who lives and works in Copenhagen. My works are colourful and quickly capture your attention, but still invite you to take on your own interpretation. Originally I attended various art courses and summer schools while I did my masters degree in public administration. After starting a consultancy career, I enrolled in an art studio in Copenhagen and shortly started to exhibit and having works admitted into censured exhibitions. Now, after a break of a few years, I enjoy focusing on the arts.
What do you intend to communicate with your art?
My works study and respond visually to sensations, impressions or personal stories that might relate to a personal process or challenge or to an ambience in my surroundings or the broader society. As an artist, I enjoy most when people experience a kind of resonance with my works and want to live around them each day. That’s what I strive to achieve.
What are the cornerstones of your work?
Colours in vibrant interaction are at the core of my works that are composed of geometric shapes, grids or other elements of hard edge. I mix clear colours with muddy, earthy colours and there often is a play of optical illusion, with a sense of space or depth and blurring the edge between imagination and reality. My giants are Bridget Riley and Agnes Martin for their presence and insight, and the Danish colour equilibrists J.F. Willumsen and Malene Landgreen.
Your objectives?
I am aiming for a more free and easy approach and like to take a path within hard edge that cultivates the analogue. Painting is to me all about exploration and not knowing where it will take me. My aim is to follow the pace of art and just shoot first and ask later – so to speak. Too much planning, figuration or pattern calculation could interrupt the state of intuitive exploration and development.
Can you share something about the painting process?
It´s about trusting that the map is revealed as I go and that the point with or discussion in the works eventually unfold and release new ideas, a path or sense of hope. I especially appreciate that moment when the painting is “getting warm”, kicks back and starts challenging me. Then a process starts, that gets me into a very pleasant kind of meditative state of energetic flow, where whatever story begins to unfold.
