Álvaro Sepúlveda’s op art creates depth and motion
Hello Álvaro, who are you?
I am a Spanish visual artist with a degree in Audiovisual Communication at Universidad Complutense de Madrid, specializing in physiology and psychology of the perception.
Were you interested in art as a child?
From a young age I was interested in art and practiced it as a hobby. However, I started making art my profession in 2012. Currently I’m still finding my style and my own personal way to express myself. This is one of the reasons why I also work as a teacher in addition to painting.
You are working with Op Art. What are typical characteristics of your work?
My work explores the ability of flat and static designs to generate depth and motion through contrast and repetition, creating an intriguing space where shapes become unsteady. I like op art because its optical effects dare spectators to investigate their perceptive processes and their own sense of reality, demanding an active attitude to them, making them the true creators of the artwork.
Your tip for other artists?
Intuition and Perseverance is the best way to advance.
Can you share any feedback from an art gallery or collector?
Currently, there is a Dominican gallery interested in how my two-dimensional artworks create powerful optical illusions.
What kind of environment do you need to be able to work optimally?
A stimulating and quiet space where I can focus on my creating process and share my ideas with creative people to get constructive feedback.
Which artists do you admire?
I love Riley and Vasarely, masters of the op art movement, who opened the door to a new way of experimentation with optical illusions.
Do you have a specific dream project?
A cooperative exhibition with contemporary op artists from all around the world.
What would you do different now, if you had to start all over?
Tht’s what i’m doing. I am starting all over again!
Do you need some motivation to create from time to time?
No, on the contrary. I have to motivate myself less in order to stop being a workaholic, ha ha ha.
Álvaro, which one of your artworks do you particularly like?
Orografía. It was an accident while I was experimenting with different things and I discovered how the artwork changes, depending on the reading directions of your eyes.
