Guatemalan Op Art by Marush Urruela
Please tell us something about your artistic background
I was born in Guatemala in 1987, where I currently live. Since I was very young, I enjoyed experimenting and learning new art techniques in after school classes. I developed a strong preference for acrylic painting in college, while studying Graphic Design. It was while living in NYC, taking design courses at Parsons and SVA, when I developed a passion for geometric and Op Art. It was in 2017 when I started exploring the hard-edge painting technique, which is the one I enjoy and I am trying to master right now.
What influences are present in your art?
You can observe a high influence in Op Art and moirè effects in my artwork. I use art to canalize my strong leaning towards “perfectionism”, which can be observed in an art made with precision.
Any words about form and color?
My style is geometric hard-edge, which sharp edges, clean lines. The use of high contrast color palettes and vibrant colors characterize my pieces.
Objectives
My goal is to become a renown full time artist, but at the same time, being able to paint without pressure and expectations, to flow with it. Art is my escape, my salvation. I wish to make the observer vibrate and feel the bold emotions through the shapes and colors I combine.
