hard edge Abstract art by Chris Daniels
A quick “Who”
Lives and works in London, graduate of Loughborough University (2001-4) and Royal Academy Schools (2005-8).
What do you do, Chris?
I make abstract paintings concerned with the principles of colour and form. I often work in series, using the same forms and systems in different compositions and colours, keeping to the rules I set for the sequence, altering the optical rhythms through these decisions. The paintings are an ongoing investigation into the effectiveness of the colour choice channeled through a self-restrained structure.
How important is masking tape for your work?
I use masking tape as a tool to create forms, often hard-edged, which contain the painting gesture. The forms and rules of the paintings may remain fixed throughout a sequence of works, using different colour combinations.
What goals do you have in mind when painting?
I aim to show the power of form and colour combinations, and how this can affect optical stimulation.
Do you have an artistic philosophy?
Not as such, but I believe the best painting comes from a clear direction or intent more than execution.
