Hello! My name is Kalkov!
Kalkov, please give us some insight into your art career
I wanted to be an artist since I was a child. I first studied at a children’s art school, and later received a diploma as a mural painter from an educational institution.
What is your most important project at the moment?
For more than 10 years I have been working on the “Circulation” series. It includes murals, canvases, street art posters, stickers and clothing design. I intend to continue in the same way with the constant search for new visual tools.
Please describe your art with your own words
I think it’s a mix of optical art and geometric abstraction. The main ornament of my series is an ancient symbol of the spiral encoded in graphic modules. For me, it is a symbol of knowledge, development and cyclic processes of the universe.
Why geometric art?
Pixels and geometric shapes are the symbols that most accurately characterize the age of information explosion. The chosen colors are determined by my mood and feelings. As a rule, these are pure, saturated colors. But there are also twists, for example when the works are based on nuances and folded elements.
Do you make a living from art alone?
It was my dream to work full time as an artist. And I didn’t hesitate to put it into practice after graduation. Art has become the main thing in my life and it has brought me a lot of positive changes.
Any tips for other artists?
Work hard, concentrate on what is important, and be self-disciplined. It will definitely produce results.
Do you have any wishes for the future?
“The most characteristic features of his works are the appeal to philosophical problems, geometric forms and a bright columnar palette, which visually suggests the style of computer games. Despite the absence of social-political relativity, Kalkov’s rosettes are distinguished by original artistic solutions and a stylistic synthesis of design and optical artistry that are familiar to a wide range of viewers.”
What are you looking forward to?
Until now, I have only painted individual walls, but I want to paint a whole building comprehensively.
Thank you for the Q&A, Kalkov.
