Miami based artist Felix Carmelo Rios
Who are you, Felix?
I am a visual artist based in Miami, Florida.
Do you give your work a certain meaning?
My work reveals my intense aesthetic gaze, forged in an endless search for forms’ intrinsic beauty. The study of languages derived from geometric abstraction and associated with minimalism has given me the expressive tools to carry out an artistic proposal that fulfills this fundamental interest. It looks to recreate the encounter with pure forms and the rhythms that their relationships produce – chasing the apparent chaos of the surrounding reality.
Please explain to us the process of creating a new work
I start from views formed by the architectural overlaps and interactions—e.g., facades, cornices, gates, objects, and landscape’s natural elements. These images captured photographically offered me an opening to undertake—via digital or through pencil sketches—a “shape hunt,” executed after thoroughly studying each detail. Focusing on those whose aesthetic quality escapes the naked eye, I create new compositions, accentuating, continuing, or combining their forms and rhythms with those from other images obtained similarly. Even these “found compositions” often act as sources for searching new details, in a process that persistently runs from the macro to the micro views. My intuition and sensitivity play a dominant role in this post-photographic practice of searching, encountering, selecting, combining, and creating.
Do you have an artistic goal, Felix?
My goal is to articulate shapes, lines, spaces, colors, and the internal rhythm produced when traveling through the city, concatenating panoramic and quick views, with slow glances at nuance nooks.
What do you want to achieve with your art?
With my art I want to bring an optimistic view of the world. I achieve it through my vibrant color palette.
