Nichole Gronvold Roller’s unique geometric abstraction
Hello Nichole, please introduce yourself
I am a full-time artist and high school art educator living in Illinois. Originally from Minnesota, I received my B.F.A. in Art Education from Minnesota State University of Moorhead. Later I continued with my education completing an M.A. in Art Education from Boston University, and an M.A. in Painting from Bradley University.
What is your biggest motivation to create art?
I have a boss that I never met. Every morning I wake up with a list of ideas of what I want to accomplish in my art-making whether I have a deadline or not. It can be maddening at times always pushing myself but I would rather be this way than bored.
In which direction do you orientate yourself artistically?
My current style is geometric abstraction with organic undertones. I like the push and pull of both deep and flat spaces. Color is an important component of my process and often comes from my personal experiences and surroundings.
Your personal goals?
A few of my goals are to never be dishonest with my art and quit when I have nothing left to say.
Nichole’s philosophy
Do not fear rejections. Get used to them and know that everyone has their unique preference in art. Once you get past fearing criticism you are free to experiment and create whatever feels natural.
Closing words
At the beginning of the pandemic, I became very focused on working with hard-edge paintings. Some artists needed release and were expressive in their mark-making during this time. I found comfort and solace in creating well-crafted shaped paintings that possess clean, precise areas of color.
