Q&A with Colombian painter Ivette Bassan
Hello Ivette, please tell us who you are
I am a highly intuitive artist who loves straight lines, patterns, blocks, rhythm and colors in particular. I am influenced by architectural patterns and graphics. Painting is part of my being; it gives my life sense and happiness.
When did you start painting?
I started painting on squared sheets with markers and colored pencils by myself, when I was 4 or 5 years old. Little by little, I started to paint on small canvases with acrylic painting. I always had a strong interest in abstraction and decorative geometric paintings.
As an artist, where do you see yourself at the moment?
Right now? If I had the time, I think I would be in a very high position as an artist. The thing is that I was married 30 years ago and have 3 wonderful kids, so it took me quite some time. But I don’t regret at all the way my life went.
A few words about your personal artistic style
I think my style is called abstract/geometric and the capacity that i get to combine the colors is what i like the most. Also, I think what makes them alive, beautiful and interesting is the combination of colors that I use.
Is art your main occupation?
Well, right now, I’m working 4 to 5 hours a day because now I have more time than i had 10 or 20 years ago, when my kids were younger. Actually, they are more independent now.
What would you recommend to aspiring artists?
Be self confident in everything you do. Do whatever you feel like doing and don’t be scared if some people won’t like it! If you do it with love and confidence, then most people will honor it! That’s a good beginning.
What have art galleries or collectors told you about your art?
They like my work because people put a lot of attention on them. Also, they tell me that my artworks make people happy. They are colorful and spread good energy!
Which other artists inspire you?
There are many of them! I had different periods. Bazille and Kandinsky were one of my first inspirations. Yayoi Kusama had an impact on me when I used to paint with dots. Omar Rayo and Vassarelly on the other hand are two of my all time favorite artists. But there are many many more that i could mention right now.
Are you dreaming of a certain art project?
Omg!!! Well, right now I’m into stripes and I love it! I love the present. I don’t know what’s coming next….❤️
Do you need to motivate yourself from time to time?
Well, I really don’t have to motivate myself a lot. As I start painting, little by little the painting tells me what to do next. It is like a kind of communication between the painting and myself.
Do you have a favorite piece (of your own art)?
The last one is a good piece (editor’s note: see the painting above) as well as one of my dot circles I did 4 or 5 years ago.
Do you like to add something?
Thank you for considering me.
