Unique artworks by Vince Smith
Welcome Vince, what motivates you as an artist?
I find nothing but pleasure in being consistently curious over how simple shapes and colours can surprise , move, disgust or bring feelings of awe, when set together in a certain formation. Its this curiosity that is really at the foundation of my work. It kicks me out of bed every morning.
What materials do you use for your art pieces?
I pull on various materials to build my wall sculptures. My medium for the majority of my work is wood. That can be meticulously cut and sanded birch ply but in the past its also been found and salvaged timber plus a few random found objects. What interests me is building up a three dimensional wall piece that challenges the idea of the traditional rectangle frame.
Let’s talk about style and method
I work almost always in abstract with close attention to levels of the plane, colour and interaction between the hard edge of either paint or actual parts wood I’m bringing together. Although I unintentionally build pieces to feel a little retro, that is what I seem to end up doing. Perhaps it lies in colour selection or form, its hard to pin down such a feeling.
Your goals for the future?
To keep my Picasso kid curiosity burning. If I can approach my work in that vein, I meet my short term goal everyday. Looking ahead… just take it a day at a time, yet keep the senses open to fulfilling opportunities within the art community.
Artistic philosophy
Be true, dig deep and find the most expressive way getting your essence across into your work. Don’t second guess whats cool. Find your niche and explore every pathway in it.
Final statement
Within my practice I seek to blur the boundaries of the two and three dimensional. I’ll explore a mixture of materials including acrylics, wood, copper wire, glass and plaster concrete. My work attempts to strip away external reference to explore a sense of serenity and of perhaps unfamiliar emotional terrain.
Artist resume
My interest is embedded in structure and lines and how they manifest into strong forms once a sculpture is complete. My relief sculptures perform a natural play of depth, shade and light which changes with ones view point. The way I work, my process, consistently brings me into conversation with my work. Each piece demands its slice uniqueness.
Thank you, Vince.
